Daniil Medvedev addresses China Open disqualification
Daniil Medvedev has addressed his disqualification from the China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic. The incident occurred when a tennis ball, hit by Medvedev following a lost rally, struck a spectator in the eye.
Tournament officials enforced strict penalties, stripping the Russian player of approximately $200,000 in prize money and 200 ATP ranking points. Medvedev described the event as an instinctual reaction to losing a point and a “very unfortunate accident,” stating he had no intention of hitting anyone. He expressed relief that the injured fan is doing well.
Speaking in Shanghai, Medvedev characterized the subsequent disciplinary actions as “bureaucracy” and suggested he may be preparing an appeal, though he remained vague regarding the specifics of any formal challenge.
