Daniil Medvedev discusses tennis career and future plans at US Open

Following a victory over Hugo Gaston at the US Open, former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev addressed recent discussions regarding his future in professional tennis. After a difficult period including a loss to Martin Damm Jr at Winston-Salem—marking his fourth defeat in five matches since Wimbledon—Medvedev had previously joked about transitioning to sports like pickleball.

During his post-match interaction with Andrea Petkovic, Medvedev explained an unusual tactic of chewing gum between changeovers, noting that it was a practical response to extreme mouth dryness when water proved ineffective. He joked that his behavior was inspired by baseball players.

Regarding his career longevity, Medvedev stated he intends to play professional tennis seriously until approximately age 37 and a half. He noted that the energy and time demands of the professional circuit are significant, leading him to consider how he might balance the sport with other activities in the future.
