Daniil Medvedev disqualified in Beijing after hitting spectator
Daniil Medvedev was disqualified during his ATP semifinals match in Beijing against Novak Djokovic after accidentally hitting a spectator in the eye with a tennis ball. The incident occurred while Medvedev was trailing in the second set. Following the disqualification, Djokovic advanced to the final and ultimately won the tournament.
Medvedev faced significant consequences, including the loss of approximately 200 ranking points and nearly 200,000 euros in prize money. He also faced criticism for imitating Djokovic’s physical distress during the match. Former professional player Greg Rusedski noted that mocking a champion like Djokovic is a tactical error that often motivates them to play better.
In an effort to make amends, Medvedev visited the injured fan in the hospital and presented him with a signed racket featuring the message, “I am sorry.” Medvedev expressed deep regret over the accidental strike, stating that while he often struggles with frustration, the hit was not an intentional act of anger.
