Danilo Gentili ordered to pay damages to Father Júlio Lancellotti
A court in São Paulo has ordered comedian and presenter Danilo Gentili to pay R$ 10,000 in moral damages to Father Júlio Lancellotti. The ruling from the 29th Civil Court follows allegations that Gentili published offensive content, including derogatory nicknames and manipulated images created with artificial intelligence.
The judge determined that Gentili exceeded the limits of satire by disseminating false information and sexually explicit AI-generated montages that targeted the priest. The court specifically noted that while the Constitution protects the right to criticism and humor, it does not permit the distribution of false or defamatory content intended to attack an individual's character.
In addition to the financial compensation, Gentili is required to remove the offending posts from his digital platforms. Failure to comply with the removal order will result in daily fines. The court rejected a request to prohibit all future publications regarding the priest, citing concerns regarding prior censorship. The decision is subject to appeal.
