Dominican Republic faces political shifts and security concerns

The Dominican Republic is experiencing significant political and social tension as the country moves toward the 2028 elections. Major political parties are actively organizing; the PLD is preparing for an internal consultation on October 18, 2026, while the PRM is seeing internal competition for presidential aspirations, with David Collado leading several preference polls.

Public security remains a central issue. President Luis Abinader has emphasized government efforts to combat crime, noting a homicide rate of 7.34 per 100,000 inhabitants. However, opposition leaders, including the PLD, have criticized the effectiveness of police reforms, citing concerns over rising violence and deaths during police interventions. Additionally, Abinader reported that authorities are blocking approximately 20 foreigners with criminal records from entering the country weekly.

Social concerns are also prominent. Former President Danilo Medina claimed that 80% of the population believes the country is on the wrong path, citing economic hardship and insecurity. Meanwhile, the Fuerza del Pueblo party has raised alarms regarding public health, reporting 14,688 infant deaths over the last six years and criticizing the state of the national healthcare system.
