Danish agricultural policies and pig farming spark local concerns
New agricultural legislation in Denmark is impacting local businesses and rural communities. The controversial fertilization law, L5, has led to a significant decline in orders for companies like Ørum Smeden, which produces manure wagons and agricultural machinery. According to Christian Borrisholt Steen of the employer association KA, the law has created uncertainty among farmers, causing them to delay investments and directly affecting the supply chain and rural employment.
In Rislev, residents are expressing concerns regarding large-scale pig production. Local environmental advocates, including former biology teacher Mogens Callesen, report issues with odor, heavy traffic, and ammonia emissions from a nearby facility housing approximately 29,000 pigs. There is growing opposition to a proposed expansion that would double the current production, as residents fear further degradation of the local environment and water quality.
