Danish authorities crack down on illegal allotment garden housing

A documentary titled ‘De lovløse kolonihaver’ has highlighted widespread rule violations in Danish allotment gardens, where residents have built houses exceeding size limits and engaged in illegal year-round residency to avoid property taxes.

In Vejle, the municipality is taking a hardline stance, threatening the demolition of approximately 80 houses. Residents facing non-compliance orders risk police reports and daily fines. Some occupants have expressed a willingness to face imprisonment rather than vacate or modify their homes.

In Aarhus, politician Gert Bjerregaard of the Liberal Party (Venstre) has called for stricter enforcement following the documentary. He intends to implement the ‘Vejle model,’ which utilizes technology to identify violations and employs mandates, fines, and police involvement to address oversized structures and unauthorized permanent living.
