Danish bishops and experts debate state-church relations
Legal experts, theologians, and bishops convened at Christiansborg for the ‘Conference on State and Folkekirke after the 2023 Prayer Day Process’. The event addressed the implications of the government's decision to abolish the Great Prayer Day (Store Bededag).
During the conference, Bishop Marianne Christiansen of the Haderslev Diocese characterized the government's handling of the process as a “significant break” with the established state-church arrangement that has existed for 174 years. The discussion featured various prominent figures, including former Church Minister Per Stig Møller and Bishop Peter Skov-Jakobsen, focusing on how the legislative changes impact the traditional distribution of roles between the state and the national church.
