Danish Church Leadership Discusses Ecumenical Challenges and Appoints New Secretariat Chief for Medieval Churches

On 15 May 2026, Hans Vium Mikkelsen, a theologian and lecturer at Folkekirkens Uddannelses‑ og Videnscenter, reflected on a recent CPCE consultation held in April. The meeting examined ecclesiastical office, ordination and leadership across national borders, emphasizing an ecumenical “unity in diversity” and noting ongoing disagreements such as women’s ordination and views on sexuality.

In parallel, the Danish Folkekirken has named Maria Kangas Christensen, 49, as the new secretariat chief responsible for coordinating the maintenance and development of Denmark’s medieval churches. Based in Viborg Stift, the unit will serve as a national hub for advice, coordination and long‑term planning for parish councils. Bishop Henrik Stubkjær highlighted her experience from serving on parish councils at Nørre Nissum and Tårnby churches and praised her organisational expertise.

The secretariat aims to create sustainable models that preserve medieval church heritage for future generations while supporting local congregations.
