Danish citizen panel proposes ban on live pig exports

A citizen panel appointed by the Danish Parliament has proposed a radical overhaul of the nation’s pig production to prioritize animal welfare. The panel’s recommendations include a complete ban on the export of live animals within five years, suggesting that slaughtering and processing should instead take place domestically.

To improve welfare, the panel advocates for more space, natural behavior opportunities, and the cessation of practices such as tail docking and fixation. They suggest that while these higher standards may increase meat prices due to lower production volumes, the Danish public should be willing to accept the cost. The panel also calls for stricter legislation, enhanced control, and mandatory labeling to provide consumers with transparency.

Lars Aagaard, chairman of the Environment and Food Committee, noted that while the direction of moving toward domestic slaughtering is correct, some of the panel’s proposals are “wild and ultimate” in their phrasing and lack economic calculations.
