Danish court sentences man to one year for assault of Swedish police officer

The Copenhagen District Court has sentenced 31-year-old Nkumba Ludovic Tshiembe to one year in prison for the assault of Christian Zedig, a 32-year-old off-duty Swedish police officer. The incident occurred on June 30 at a sports bar in Copenhagen during a World Cup match between Norway and Ivory Coast. Zedig, a father of two from Eksjö, was assaulted while attempting to intervene in a fight.

Tshiembe, a Danish citizen who arrived from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as an infant, admitted to the attack. He has a prior criminal history involving violent offenses, including attempted murder and rape. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a one-year ban on visiting nightlife venues during specific hours.

The sentence has sparked political debate in Denmark, with officials from across the political spectrum, including the government and the Danish People's Party, calling for tougher penalties. While Denmark recently doubled penalties for aggravated assault, the specific provision under which Tshiembe was convicted did not fall under these new, stricter regulations.
