Danish cultural figures call for library protection and literacy support

More than 90 cultural figures on the island of Bornholm have signed an open letter to Culture Minister Zenia Stampe, calling for a national solution to protect threatened libraries. Led by author Pernille Boelskov, the group argues that local budget cuts in Bornholm Regional Municipality are targeting essential welfare services rather than non-essential spending.

Separately, efforts to promote early literacy in Denmark are gaining momentum. Kaya Hoff, director of the publisher Carlsen, emphasizes the importance of introducing modern children's literature in nurseries and kindergartens to foster a lifelong love of reading. This aligns with government initiatives aimed at providing books and pedagogical materials to early childhood education settings to combat literacy challenges.
