Danish detention centers face severe overcrowding

Local detention centers in Denmark, including Næstved, Ringsted, Holbæk, and Nykøbing Falster, are facing significant pressure due to new capacity mandates. Following a decision by Danmarks Fængsler on July 15, these facilities are required to house more inmates than their original design intended.

In Næstved Arrest, the facility is operating at 144 percent of its calculated capacity. Staff report that the overcrowding necessitates the use of bunk beds and double occupancy in cells designed for single occupants. Prison officers have expressed concerns regarding the decline in quality of life for both inmates and staff, noting that managing conflicts in cramped conditions is increasingly difficult. Officials are calling on politicians for solutions, stating that Danmarks Fængsler cannot manage the increased load alone.
