Danish dietary habits and rising avocado-related hand injuries
A recent consumer analysis by Landbrug & Fødevarer, utilizing Voxmeter data, reveals a paradox in Danish dietary habits. While 51 percent of Danes express a desire to eat more vegetables, the actual daily consumption of vegetables has declined from 55 percent in 2024 to 51 percent in 2026. Only 17 percent of the population believes they meet the official recommendation of 600 grams of fruit and vegetables per day. Experts suggest the issue is not a lack of motivation, but rather practical barriers in daily life, such as time constraints, price, and the perceived difficulty of preparing vegetables.
In a separate health trend, medical professionals are reporting an increase in severe hand injuries caused by preparing avocados. Data from a large German hospital shows a significant rise in cases, with 83 patients treated for such injuries between early 2022 and mid-2026. The injuries typically occur when a knife slips while attempting to remove the hard pit or when cutting through the skin. Hand surgeon Dr. Michael Lehnert notes that these accidents often require surgery to repair damaged tendons and nerves, followed by extensive rehabilitation. The statistics indicate that 81.9 percent of those injured are women, with more than half falling within the 20 to 29 age demographic.
