Danish driver sentenced to four years for fatal reckless driving
Youssef Haissam El-Chiri, a 20-year-old man, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Aarhus District Court following a fatal reckless driving incident in Tilst. The sentence also includes a five-year driving ban.
The incident occurred after El-Chiri fled from police following erratic driving in the Aarhus suburb of Tilst. During the pursuit, he drove at high speeds into a residential home where a family was sleeping. A 64-year-old woman inside the house was killed when the vehicle crashed into the building.
This case is notable for being one of the first in Denmark to utilize a new paragraph in the penal code, section 241a, which increases the maximum penalty for traffic fatalities resulting from reckless driving to up to ten years. El-Chiri admitted to the reckless driving, which served as a mitigating circumstance in his sentencing.
