Danish handball players navigate motherhood and professional careers

Professional handball players in Denmark are addressing the logistical and physical challenges of balancing motherhood with elite sports. Sandra Toft, who has returned to the national team, is currently in discussions with national coach Helle Thomsen regarding the practicalities of participating in the European Championship while managing family life.

Toft noted that while her club, Győr, has established arrangements for her family in Hungary, the complexities of international travel for the national team remain a subject of ongoing dialogue.

Similarly, players from Team Esbjerg, such as Rikke Iversen, have highlighted the importance of peer support. Iversen, who returned to high-level play following the birth of her first child, described the formation of a ‘mødregruppe’ (mothers' group) within the club as a vital resource for navigating the physical and mental demands of returning to professional sports after pregnancy.
