Danish Health Minister reacts to deteriorating hospital conditions
Danish Health Minister Ida Auken has described the deteriorating condition of hospitals in Central Denmark Region as ‘serious’ following reports of severe infrastructure failures. The region faces a renovation backlog estimated at approximately two billion kroner.
Investigations have revealed critical issues at several facilities. At Regionshospitalet Horsens, a cracked body storage box caused leaking fluids and foul odors, while water systems for critical functions are so aged that spare parts are no longer available. At Regionshospitalet Silkeborg, leaking pipes have caused moisture and odor problems. Additionally, social care facilities in Viby are dealing with rotting windows.
Regional Council Chairman Anders G. Christensen has stated that the region lacks the necessary funds to address the two billion kroner deficit. The region is seeking financial support from a health fund established by the Danish Parliament in 2024. Minister Auken noted that while maintaining suitable hospital buildings is a regional responsibility, the current state of these installations has direct consequences for both patients and staff.
