Danish housing organizations launch health initiative in social housing

A new project titled ‘Sundhed tæt på’ (Health Close By) aims to transform community centers in Danish social housing into hubs for health services, counseling, and exercise. The initiative involves four housing organizations: Himmerland Boligforening, Boligforeningen Ringgården, FOB on Vestsjælland, and ØsterBO in Vejle.

Supported by 1.2 million DKK from Helsefonden and Nordjyllandsfonden, the 18-month project will investigate how existing communal spaces can be better utilized to reach residents who may not use traditional healthcare services. The project focuses on developing solutions based on local needs and studying how interior design affects participation.

The long-term goal is to create models and recommendations that other housing organizations can implement, potentially bringing health and prevention services closer to up to one million residents in the social housing sector.
