Danish media faces economic shifts as youth news spending rises

New research highlights a shifting landscape for Danish media driven by digital transformation and changing consumer habits. A report from Roskilde University, ‘Danskernes brug af nyhedsmedier 2026’, reveals that Danes aged 18 to 24 now demonstrate the highest willingness to pay for news media at 26 percent. This surpasses older demographics, such as those aged 55 to 64, who show a 23 percent willingness to pay.

Simultaneously, the economic foundation of Danish media houses is under significant pressure. The rise of foreign tech giants like Meta and Alphabet has largely captured the advertising market, which previously provided roughly half of daily newspaper revenues. This shift has increased the political importance of state support systems.

Researchers note that as news distribution evolves through podcasts and video, policymakers face challenges in defining what content qualifies for state aid. Maintaining the autonomy of media houses is considered essential for democratic functions, ensuring journalists can investigate institutions without fear of censorship or content blocking.
