Danish municipalities implement new strategies for elderly care

Danish municipalities are addressing increasing challenges in elderly care. A survey from KL indicates that 74 percent of all 98 municipalities report a rise in difficult dementia cases, characterized by aggressive or incomprehensible behavior. In Morsø Municipality, officials emphasize that such behavior is often a form of communication stemming from frustration or insecurity rather than a problem in itself. To manage this, Morsø has implemented conflict management training and hired specialized pedagogical staff to support caregivers.

In Ringsted Municipality, technology is being introduced to assist with care. Starting this autumn, a project will implement “intelligent” diapers that monitor when they need changing and collect data on urination frequency. This technology aims to optimize care routines, prevent unnecessary disturbances to citizens—particularly at night—and provide staff with better insights into daily routines. Additionally, the municipality plans to expand the use of digital screen visits to reduce the need for physical travel.
