Danish municipalities launch youth nicotine cessation project

Five Danish municipalities—Faxe, Næstved, Vordingborg, Guldborgsund, and Holbæk—have partnered to develop advanced nicotine cessation programs through the NikoFree project. Supported by funding from the Danish Health Authority, the initiative aims to address the rising use of vapes, snus, and other nicotine products among children and adolescents.

Jacob Brandt, who works on the project, noted that nicotine use is linked to mental health challenges in youth, including anxiety, depression, and concentration difficulties. Statistics indicate that one in three young people aged 15 to 29 uses nicotine products, with some children as young as eight years old participating in use.

The NikoFree project has reported positive preliminary results. Out of 259 participants, 23 percent achieved complete nicotine freedom after six months, while 19 percent reduced their consumption by more than half. Health officials are emphasizing the importance of early parental intervention and communication regarding nicotine risks.
