Danish Parliament approves compensation for Greenlandic women

The Danish Parliament has approved compensation for Greenlandic women who were subjected to forced contraception. Between the 1960s and 1990s, more than 4,000 Greenlandic women had intrauterine devices (IUDs) inserted, often without their consent or the consent of parents in the case of minors.

Greenland has presented a report examining the implications of this campaign, which included teenagers as young as 12. The document addresses whether these systematic policies can be classified as ‘genocide’. While the investigation was intended to provide legal clarity, the mandated experts produced two distinct reports rather than a single unified analysis, leading to criticism from victims regarding the lack of Inuit specialists in the working group.
