Danish parties warn government of packaging waste agreement breach

Danish political parties Enhedslisten, Alternativet, and De Konservative are warning the government against a potential breach of a 2022 agreement regarding extended producer responsibility for packaging waste.

The dispute follows a proposal by Climate Minister Samira Nawa to introduce a legislative cap on the payments producers make to municipalities for waste management. The criticizing parties, which include both government supporters and opposition members, argue that the proposed model alters the core of the existing agreement without prior consultation or formal termination of the original deal.

Lisbeth Torfing of Enhedslisten described the move as highly critical, stating that the government has not sought a new agreement or formally notified them of an intent to rescind the current one. The parties are demanding that the government convene the agreement circle for negotiations to establish a future model before the current temporary arrangement expires at the end of the year.
