Danish performing arts groups advocate for reform and better working conditions

Performing arts organizations in Denmark are intensifying efforts to influence an upcoming performing arts reform. On September 25, 2026, several unions, including Danske Scenografer and the Danish Musicians' Union, met with Culture Minister Zenia Stampe to advocate for sustainable working conditions. The groups emphasized that the reform must address Fair Practice, including proper wages, contracts, and working conditions, rather than focusing solely on institutional structures.

Key concerns raised include the economic instability faced by freelance and project-based artists. The organizations are calling for a professional development and competence pool to support the long-term career growth of self-employed artists. Minister Stampe noted a desire to see more discussion regarding the art itself within the context of the reform.

Separately, the industry association Dansk Scenekunst held its annual general meeting, where Lene Christensen, CEO of Østerbro Teater, was re-elected as chairperson. The association has recently expanded, growing to 114 members following its transition from Dansk Teater. The leadership aims to continue strengthening the political influence of the performing arts sector in Denmark.
