Danish potato farmers face closure over new nitrogen regulations
Danish potato farmers are facing potential closure due to new nitrogen regulation laws recently introduced in the Folketinget. The legislation, aimed at improving water environments, seeks to reduce nitrogen runoff by limiting fertilizer use.
Farmers argue that the regulations are based on outdated and incorrect data regarding how much nitrogen potato crops actually leach into the environment. Critics, including Kristian Møller Sørensen, chairman of Kartoffelmelscentralen and Karup Kartoffelmelsfabrik, claim that because potato crops have long growing seasons and high nitrogen uptake, they are being unfairly categorized as high-leaching crops.
Individual producers report that the new rules may force them to leave large portions of their land fallow to maintain their current potato production levels. For some, such as farmer Rasmus Trads, the financial impact of reduced fertilizer access and mandatory fallowing makes continued production economically unviable.
