Danish Regions to take over Heart Runner and Defibrillator Network
Danish Regions (Danske Regioner) have announced they will take over the management of the Heart Runner scheme and the Defibrillator Network from TrygFonden, effective January 1, 2028. This transition is described as a natural progression, as TrygFonden has focused on initiating these programs before handing them over to the regional authorities responsible for acute medical treatment in Denmark.
The change is expected to have no practical impact on the approximately 61,000 volunteer heart runners or the owners of the 26,703 registered defibrillators. Currently, heart runners are activated an average of 10 times daily.
In a separate development regarding the establishment of the East Denmark Region (Region Østdanmark) on January 1, 2027, regional authorities have decided against a mass replacement of physical health cards. Instead, the 2.8 million citizens in the new region will have their cards replaced gradually as they are needed, such as during moves or changes in doctors. This approach is intended to be both economically and environmentally sustainable, avoiding a projected one-time cost of approximately 30.2 million DKK.
