Danish rent boards face long waiting times for tenants

New data from the Danish Rental Tenants Organization (LLO) and the Housing Authority reveal significant delays in municipal rent boards and resident complaint boards across Denmark. The long waiting periods are causing financial insecurity and uncertainty for tenants.

In Roskilde, tenants face the longest delays, with waiting times ranging between 24 and 30 months for a decision. In some instances, tenants have felt pressured to accept unfair rent increases or high move-out bills because they could not afford to wait for a resolution. In one case, a group of tenants in Roskilde accepted unreasonable rent hikes to avoid the lengthy process.

Other municipalities also show high waiting times, including Gentofte and Odder, where the average wait in the rent board is 177 days. LLO chairperson Helene Toxværd is calling on politicians to strengthen these boards by providing more employees, better training, and increased resources. The organization also suggests implementing an authorization scheme for landlords to reduce the overall number of cases.
