Danish restaurants fear administrative complexity from new VAT plans

Danish restaurant operators have expressed concerns regarding the potential administrative complexity of proposed government VAT changes. The new plans could impact establishments that offer both dine-in services and takeaway options.

Daniel Vesti Knuttel, CEO of NoHo Partners, noted that while a reduction in food VAT is viewed positively, there is a significant need for clarity regarding practical implementation. Specifically, concerns were raised about the accounting and registration challenges of treating the same meal differently based on whether it is consumed on-site or taken away. The goal of lowering VAT is to prevent economic incentives that favor takeaway over in-restaurant dining. Additionally, the industry organization HORESTA has called for restaurants to be included in the VAT model to help mitigate rising costs.
