Danish students reach record low PISA academic levels

Danish 15-year-olds have reached their lowest academic levels in PISA history, according to recent data. The decline is most notable in reading, mathematics, and science. Between 2015 and 2025, the drop in reading and math is equivalent to nearly two years of learning, while science has seen a decline of approximately one year.

Gordon Ørskov Madsen, chairman of the Danish Teachers' Union (DLF), described the results as deeply serious and a long-term downward trend. He noted that one in nine students fails Danish and mathematics in the 9th grade, which carries significant consequences for both individuals and society.

To address the crisis, experts and union leaders suggest that the primary issue is a lack of qualified adult time in classrooms. Proposals include increasing the number of teaching staff to ensure two qualified adults are present in classrooms more frequently. One suggestion involves an annual investment of 30 billion DKK to increase teacher positions from approximately 60,000 to 100,000, allowing for more individualized support and reduced classroom disruption.
