Danish Technological Institute to deploy mobile water purification in Ukraine
The Danish Technological Institute (DTI) is leading the ‘Ukraine Water Resilience’ project to develop and deploy mobile, off-grid water purification units in war-torn regions of Ukraine. Supported by 5.5 million Danish kroner from the Grundfos Foundation and in collaboration with the International Red Cross, the initiative aims to provide clean drinking water to areas where waterworks and electricity grids have been destroyed.
The project involves creating at least three robust, containerized purification units powered by solar energy. These units are designed to operate entirely without connection to a central grid and are intended to be simple enough for local volunteers to operate after minimal training. Once fully deployed, the units are expected to provide 100,000 liters of drinking water per day, meeting the basic needs of up to 50,000 civilians according to UN standards.
Beyond immediate humanitarian aid, the project serves a dual purpose of strengthening Danish and Nordic civil protection. By testing technology under extreme wartime conditions, developers aim to ensure the systems are resilient enough to handle domestic crises in Denmark caused by cyberattacks, sabotage, or supply failures.
