Former Nigerian CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Remanded to Kuje Prison

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Kekemeke, ordered the remand of former Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) chairman Danladi Umar to the Kuje Correctional Centre. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Umar on four counts of alleged corruption and conferring undue advantage on himself while serving as CCT head.

The prosecution alleges Umar used his wife’s bank account to receive ₦5.5 million in 2021 from a contractor that painted the CCT headquarters, ₦6 million on 25 January 2024 from a contractor that digitised the tribunal’s records, and directed a contractor to pay ₦2.43 million as tuition for his daughter at Baze University, Abuja. The charges are punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. Umar pleaded not guilty and his legal team filed a bail application, which the court adjourned for a hearing on 15 July.

Umar previously presided over high‑profile cases, including the trials of former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former Chief Justice Walter Onnoghen, and was removed from the CCT chairmanship by the Senate in 2024 amid misconduct allegations.
