Danny Boyle's film Ink to open Venice Film Festival

Oscar‑winning director Danny Boyle’s new drama Ink — written by playwright James Graham and starring Jack O’Connell as editor Larry Lamb, Guy Pearce as media magnate Rupert Murdoch and Claire Foy — will open the 83rd Venice Film Festival. The film dramatises Murdoch’s 1969 purchase of the British tabloid The Sun and its transformation into the country’s best‑selling newspaper. It will premiere in competition on September 2 2026 at the Sala Grande on the Lido, marking Boyle’s first outing at the world’s oldest film festival.

Netflix has acquired U.S. and Latin American distribution rights, while Studiocanal, Media Res and House Productions handle theatrical releases in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Benelux, Australia and New Zealand. Boyle said, “I’ve been to the Biennale many times, but this is my baptism at the film festival,” underscoring the cultural weight of the opening slot.
