Danube and Drava rivers face extreme low water levels
Extreme low water levels in the Danube and Drava rivers have exposed historical artifacts, including the remains of a steam ferry used near Erdut for transporting train carriages. Experts note that these water levels have been exceptionally low since November 2024, complicating navigation and impacting local industries.
Local sectors are facing significant challenges. In the Erdut vineyards, producers are adapting to difficult conditions, noting a decrease in wine yields despite maintaining quality. Residents and workers along the river face uncertainty regarding the future flow of the Danube and the long-term stability of the ecosystem.
Environmental experts from Eko Pan warn that Croatian rivers, particularly sensitive karst watercourses, are under threat from multiple factors. These include climate change leading to prolonged droughts and flash floods, the construction of dams and hydroelectric plants, pollution, and riverbed regulation for navigation or flood protection. Such interventions can disrupt natural dynamics, lower groundwater levels, and damage surrounding habitats, including forests and agricultural lands.
