Danube drought disrupts shipping and grain exports across Europe

Record low water levels on the Danube are causing significant logistical and economic disruptions across Europe. In Bulgaria, the Vidin Union of Grain Producers reports that over 90% of this year's grain production remains stuck in warehouses or open storage because river transport has halted. Farmers face rising costs for alternative road transport, estimated at 40 to 50 euros per ton, and fear a lack of storage space for upcoming sunflower and corn harvests.

In Austria, the country is facing its driest 12-month period in 176 years. Authorities are testing pilot projects, such as using gravel-loaded barges to direct water flow toward navigable channels to maintain commercial shipping. Similarly, in Hungary, officials are considering sinking barges to raise water levels to ensure sufficient cooling for the Paks nuclear power plant. These measures highlight the growing pressure the drought places on navigation, energy infrastructure, and agriculture throughout the Danube region.
