Danube drought reveals WWII shipwrecks and mammoth remains
Extreme drought across Europe has caused river levels to drop to historic lows, revealing significant historical artifacts along the Danube. In the stretch between Serbia and Romania, the receding waters have exposed the hulls of German warships, part of a fleet intentionally scuttled in September 1944 to impede Soviet advances. Near Budapest, the drought uncovered the remains of two Wehrmacht soldiers, a military motorcycle, and various unexploded munitions, including anti-tank mines.
Further along the river, archaeologists near Ryahovo, Bulgaria, discovered well-preserved mammoth remains, including a jawbone and tusks. In Slovakia, authorities have also dealt with the discovery of unexploded WWII-era bombs.
The hydrological crisis is impacting infrastructure and energy. In Hungary, the Paks nuclear power plant was forced to limit operations due to low water levels but has begun restarting a second turbine following a slight rise in the Danube. Meanwhile, in Germany, low water levels on the Rhine are threatening commercial shipping, with experts warning that certain sections may soon become unnavigable for cargo vessels.
