Danube low water levels impact Serbian river transport
Low water levels on the Danube have significantly disrupted river transport in Serbia. Through the end of September, the number of passengers on river cruises decreased by approximately 12 percent compared to the same period last year.
The impact on cargo is even more pronounced. According to the Port Management Agency, cargo transshipment in ports fell by 63 percent in August and 57 percent in September compared to the previous year. While the cruise season initially showed potential to exceed last year’s record of 222,000 passengers, the hydrological conditions hindered growth.
Officials noted that the low water levels are a regional issue affecting transport across the entire Danube region, transcending national borders. The Serbian Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure emphasized that water transport remains a vital component of the national economy and international trade.
