Danube River drought causes groundwater levels to drop near Bratislava
The Danube River is experiencing critically low flow levels, preventing it from supplying water to the surrounding natural environment. According to the conservation association BROZ, the river is currently functioning more like a channel, and its receding water levels are actively draining water from the adjacent land.
This phenomenon has caused groundwater levels near Bratislava to drop by tens of centimeters, with some areas seeing a decline of approximately one meter. If the drought persists, groundwater levels in the lower parts of Žitný ostrov are also expected to fall.
Environmentalists warn that while the massive gravel deposits in the Danubian Lowland currently protect the vast groundwater reserves from fatal impact, this situation serves as a warning. Climate scientists predict a changing flow regime for the Danube, characterized by more frequent or prolonged periods of low flow and an increased risk of extreme low-flow events.
The drought is also affecting floodplain forests, particularly young growth. While older trees with deep roots are more resilient, they are exhibiting signs of drought stress, such as yellowing and leaf loss, to conserve water. This stress can also reduce their resistance to parasites and pathogens.
