Danube River flow remains well below seasonal averages

The Danube River's flow at the Romanian border is expected to increase slightly between September 19 and 26, 2026, reaching approximately 1,650 cubic meters per second. Despite this minor rise, discharge levels remain significantly below the multi-annual September average of 3,800 cubic meters per second.

According to the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (INHGA), the hydrological regime for the month is estimated to be between 30% and 50% of historical averages. While some hill and mountain rivers may see level increases due to forecasted precipitation, many river basins, including the Crasna, Criș, and Bârlad, are expected to remain below 30% of their usual levels.

The low water levels have implications for the energy market, specifically regarding the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, which may only be able to restart toward the end of September.
