Danube River hits historic low water level in Budapest

The Danube River has reached a historic low in Budapest, with water level sensors recording a depth of only 1 centimeter. This measurement surpasses previous negative records, including the 27-centimeter level recorded in July 2018.

The extreme drought has significant practical implications. River navigation is heavily hindered, and the safety of water transport is threatened by obstacles hidden in the riverbed that are now exposed. Visible remnants of historical structures, such as the wreckage of the former Franz Joseph Bridge near the Liberty Bridge, have become apparent due to the receding waters.

While the low water levels at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant reached a minimum of -105 centimeters, experts anticipate that rising water levels in the coming days may stabilize production. Forecasts suggest that incoming precipitation could bring some relief to the river's water levels.
