Danube River investigation launched over brown substance leak near Almásfüzitő

Authorities and environmental experts are investigating a brown substance leaking into the Danube River near Almásfüzitő, Hungary. The phenomenon was first reported by local anglers who noticed discolored water and an unusual odor near the riverbank, potentially exacerbated by low water levels.

Investigations are focused on the area behind the red mud reservoir. While some preliminary information suggests the discoloration might be natural—originating from humic substances in former marshland—officials have not reached a final conclusion. Approximately 30 samples have been collected from various points for laboratory analysis to determine the exact composition of the substance and its potential impact on aquatic life.

Envirotis Zrt., the company operating the nearby facility, stated that no extraordinary or accidental events occurred at their site. The Győr-Moson-Sopron County Government Office, acting as the water protection authority, is conducting the analysis and will provide updates once the laboratory results are available.
