Danube River low water levels disrupt navigation and cruises

Low water levels in the Danube River, driven by high temperatures and a lack of rainfall, are disrupting navigation and river cruises across Central and Eastern Europe. In Vienna, 23 cruise ships are currently docked, with many unable to continue traveling eastward due to the shallow water. While Wien Holding reports that ships are staying in port longer than usual, the water management company viadonau stated that an official ban on navigation has not yet been implemented.

Satellite imagery from the Copernicus program confirms a dramatic reduction in water levels across several major European rivers. In Hungary, the low water levels have already caused significant issues for shipping. In Germany, a natural phenomenon known as ‘Donauversickerung’—where the river flows into underground karst systems—is becoming more pronounced during dry periods, occasionally causing the surface flow to disappear entirely in certain sections.
