Danube River tourism: development efforts in Moldova Nouă

The Danube River Gorges, located in southwestern Romania near Dubova, Eșelnița, and Orsova, represent one of the country’s most dramatic natural landscapes. The area, part of the Danube Defile in Mehedinți County, features steep cliffs, caves, and scenic views that attract tourists for cruises and hiking.

In the nearby town of Moldova Nouă, local authorities are working to capture more of the cruise ship traffic that currently passes through without stopping. Mayor Adrian Torma noted that while the town possesses a fluvial station and has received interest from the Ministry of Transport, infrastructure and local attractions must be improved to retain visitors.

To address this, the Moldova Nouă City Hall is collaborating with Babeș-Bolyai University to develop a regional development strategy, expected to be completed this autumn. The long-term vision includes improving road connections, such as the planned highway from Timișoara toward Serbia, and integrating the town into broader economic and transport networks.
