To combat historic drought and low water levels in the Danube, the Hungarian government has initiated emergency measures to ensure the cooling water supply for the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. The plant is currently operating at approximately 25% capacity.

The primary intervention involves constructing a riverbed threshold between Paks and Dunaszentbenedek. This project, estimated to cost 6.165 billion HUF, will utilize 145,000 cubic meters of stone to raise the water level by up to one meter. Additionally, two 80-meter barges will be submerged to provide a short-term water level increase of roughly 20 centimeters.

Several companies have stepped forward with donations to support the effort. Duna Aszfalt Zrt. has provided two barges and 1,000 tons of stone, while Market Építő Zrt. has offered 10,000 tons of stone. Prime Minister Péter Magyar noted that a total shutdown of the Paks plant could result in monthly economic damages of approximately 50 billion HUF.
