Danube shipping development requires international cooperation

At an international conference in Ruse, Bulgaria, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Anna Natova emphasized that the development of shipping on the Danube River cannot be the priority of a single nation alone. She noted that water levels in Ruse are influenced by conditions in other European regions, including Bavaria, the Alps, and the Carpathians.

Key challenges facing Danube shipping include ensuring year-round navigability, addressing prolonged low water levels, and managing extreme climate events. Natova argued that investments should target sections that restrict movement across the entire transport corridor based on collective assessments rather than isolated national plans.

The forum also marked the 70th anniversary of the Executive Agency ‘Research and Maintenance of the Danube River’ with the validation of a commemorative postage stamp. Natova highlighted the DISMAR project, a joint initiative between Bulgaria and Romania, which implements an integrated waterway marking system and a real-time digital information platform. Bulgaria is set to chair the EU Strategy for the Danube Region in 2026.
