Danube shipping faces disruption due to Paks riverbed works

The construction of a new riverbed threshold near the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary has triggered significant international concern regarding Danube River shipping. The Vienna-based organization Pro Danube International has issued an open letter to the European Commission, the Danube Commission, and relevant water management authorities.

Industry experts warn that the sinking of two jetties and the installation of the new threshold could lead to extraordinary restrictions on international shipping through late November. Concerns include unpredictable transit windows, which can be announced only hours in advance, potentially causing cargo congestion, increased shipping costs, and disruptions to international supply chains.

This development follows long-standing tensions between Austria and Hungary regarding energy and infrastructure on the Danube. While the works are deemed necessary to ensure stable cooling water supply for the Paks plant, maritime stakeholders are demanding more predictable schedules, transparent information, and sustainable long-term solutions to protect the Danube’s reputation as a reliable commercial route.
