The backlog is concentrated at the entrance to the Sulina Canal, the only channel deep enough to reach the Ukrainian ports of Reni and Izmail. Delays have been attributed to a shortage of pilots and the necessity of prioritizing specific cargoes, such as fuel shipments.
While traffic is showing signs of improvement—with expectations of at least seven vessels entering on Monday compared to five per day last week—logistics experts warn of potential issues. Katerina Kononenko of Avalon Shipping noted that while clearing the queue could be possible if 10 vessels enter daily, it may take several weeks. Furthermore, increased inbound traffic could create new bottlenecks for departing ships due to a limited number of inspectors available for mandatory checks.
Ukrainian railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia indicated that while Danube-based exports could increase, operations remain hampered by vessel shortages and frequent air-raid alerts in the Odesa region.
