Danube water levels expected to drop following brief rise

The Danube river is experiencing significantly low water levels, with recent minor rises expected to be short-lived. In Apatin, the water level is currently around -95 centimeters, but forecasts from the Republic Hydrometeorological Service and Hungarian agency HYDROINFO suggest it will drop to approximately -100 centimeters by Saturday, August 15.

Data from upstream stations in Hungary, specifically Mohács and Baja, indicate a downward trend that is expected to continue through the weekend. Austrian forecasts via the viadonau/DoRIS system also predict a small rise in the next 24 to 48 hours followed by stabilization and further decline. This suggests the recent wave of water lacks the strength to reverse the long-term low-water regime.

In Novi Sad, the receding waters have revealed historical remains previously submerged for decades. Local observers reported seeing the foundations of the Petrovaradin Fortress on Ratno Ostrvo, a sight described as unprecedented by local residents.
