DAP holds emergency meeting following Najib Razak's conditional pardon
The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has convened an emergency Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting to determine its position within Malaysia’s unity government following the conditional pardon of former Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Najib, 73, was granted a conditional pardon by the Federal Territories Pardons Board, chaired by King Sultan Ibrahim. The order allows him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, provided he pays a reduced fine of RM50 million related to his SRC International case.
The political implications are significant for the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration. DAP leaders holding Cabinet positions are facing internal pressure, with some members calling for resignations in light of the pardon. The PH Presidential Council, chaired by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, is also reviewing the situation and Barisan Nasional’s role in the government.
While there have been discussions regarding an early general election, such a move could impact the government's ability to pass the upcoming Budget 2027, which requires a simple majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
