DAP urges AGC briefing after teen's acquittal in school stabbing case

The Democratic Action Party (DAP) has called on the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to provide a formal briefing to the family of Yap Shing Xuen, a 16-year-old who was fatally stabbed at a school in Bandar Utama.

The request follows a Shah Alam High Court decision to acquit the 15-year-old suspect on the grounds that he was of unsound mind at the time of the offense. While the court acquitted the teenager, Justice Adlin Abdul Majid ordered that he be detained at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak at the pleasure of the Selangor Sultan for psychiatric treatment.

Deputy Communications Minister and Wanita DAP chief Teo Nie Ching emphasized that the AGC should explain the medical evidence behind the ruling and the implications of the psychiatric detention order under Section 348 of the Criminal Procedure Code. She also urged the prosecution to clarify whether they intend to file an appeal within the 14-day statutory period. The victim's mother has reportedly called for a public petition to urge the AGC to appeal the acquittal.
