Daqiu Island conservation initiative enters fifth year

The fifth annual ‘Protect Daqiu’ initiative has launched on Daqiu Island to preserve the habitat of sika deer. The program involves a collaborative effort between the Lienchiang County Government, the Beigan Township Office, agricultural and tourism professionals, local partners, and tourists.

For the first time, 24 members of the national military have joined the conservation efforts. Key activities include the removal of invasive plant species, such as ‘Jade Coral’, and the implementation of resource recycling by converting removed plants into biochar. Other tasks include managing insect hotels and testing fog nets to retain water on the island. The initiative aims to create a more hospitable environment for the local deer population through hands-on ecological maintenance.
